   talk shop　仕事の話をする

「  仕事の話をする 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”     talk shop ” といいます。

例文

Everyone disliked him because he talked shop in the party

パーティで仕事の話をしていたので、皆は彼を好きじゃなかった。

”talk shop“

直訳すると、「店の話をする」ということですが、ネイティブは

「仕事の話をする」という意味で使います。

shopが店ではなく「仕事」を表すのは、この表現独特の使われ方です。

“Let’s have a talk shop.”や、”Let’s talk shop.”は、

「さぁ、仕事の話をしよう。」という意味になります。

ただ、どちらかというと、嫌な場面で使われるようです。

休日に友達と遊びに来ていて仕事の話をしたくないと言うときは、

I don’t want to talk shop tonight.

と言ってみましょう。

   show someone up  恥をかかせる

「  恥をかかせる 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”     show someone up ” といいます。

例文

Tom was very proud that he showed the bully up at school.

トムは学校でいじめっ子に恥をかかせたことで得意気でした。

show upは、

（１）現れる、

（２）（欠点・本質などを）露にする、暴く　

（３）～に打ち勝つ、はるかに凌ぐ

などの意味になります。

目的語として「show someone up」と（人）を伴うときは、

「（人）に恥をかかせる・優れていることを見せつける」という意味になります。

「show me up」を「私に恥をかかせる」という意味で使うときは、

「embarrass」とほぼ同じ意味になります。

また、「show me up」を「私より優れている（ことを見せつける）」

という意味にも使われますが、

これは「outperform」や「outclass」に近い意味になります。

   rule of thumb　経験から言えば

「  経験から言えば 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”     rule of thumb ” といいます。

例文

He determines his schedule by rule of thumb.

彼は経験則でスケジュールを決める

rule は「規則、法則、物差し」、thumbは「親指」。

直訳すると「親指の法則」になります。

昔、ビールなどの醸造業者が親指を使って温度を測ったり、親指を

物差しの代わりに使ったことに由来しているようです。

そこから、「おおざっぱな方法」「経験から得られた方法」といった意味になりました。

「経験」を述べるときには、一般的にはexperienceを使います。例えば、

「私の経験から～」と言うときは「according to my experience」などと言ったりします。

それに対して”rule of thumb” はややくだけたものですが、

それ故に日常会話やメールでよく使われます。

”rule of thumb”の熟語を使うことで、「あ、この人、英語できるかも」という印象を

与えることができるかもしれませんし、積極的に使ってみましょう。

「  一言で言えば 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”      in a nutshell ” といいます。

例文

In a nutshell, Japanese are hard workers.

ひと言で言うと、日本人は努力家なんです。

”nutshell “  は、直訳すると「ナッツの殻」になりますが、

この表現は、「一言で言えば」「簡潔に説明すると」という意味合いを持っています。

数少ない言葉で何かを簡潔に説明するときや、言葉少なく要点をまとめたりするときに使います。

「in a nutshell」はギリシャが起源の言葉で、19世紀には英語のフレーズとして広まりました。

木の実はとても小さいものです。nutshell （木の実の殻）におさまるようにまとめる、

という意味がこの言葉の由来とされています。
