「  死に体 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”    lame duck ” といいます。

例文

Now the President is nothing but a lame duck.

今や大統領はレイム・ダックにすぎません。

英語のlame duckは,

lame[足の不自由な、不十分な] ＋duck[アヒル]という慣用表現で

「足の不自由なアヒル」⇒「役に立たない(役に立たなくなった)人、ダメな人間」

→「再戦に敗れたが任期がまだ残ってる政治家」という意味になります。

現代の英語会話の中で使われている「lame duck レームダック」は

任期終了を間近に控え、政治的影響力を失った大統領や首相。

再選に失敗した、まだ任期中の落選議員(主にアメリカ)

(株式取引所の)債務不履行者, 財政危機の会社の意味があります。

レームダックの語源は？

1700年代のイギリスのロンドン証券取引所において支払不能で「債務不履行」と

なった株式仲買人や証券会社を指す言葉として用いられました。

その後、1860年代にアメリカにおいて再選に失敗し、残った任期を消化しているだけ

の大統領を指す「政治用語」として使われるようになりました。

特に中間選挙で与党の議席を大幅に減らした大統領に対しては選挙直後から

「レームダック・プレジデント（lame duck president）」と揶揄されることもあります。

  reinvent the wheel  無駄な努力をする

「   無駄な努力をする 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”   reinvent the wheel ” といいます。

例文

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel for this project. 

このプロジェクトをわざわざ一からやり直す必要はない。

「don’t  reinvent the wheel」　直訳すると「ホイール（タイヤ）を再発明するな」

となります。　これだとなんだかよくわかりません。

　実は、「便利な物は使いなさい」「無駄な努力をする」「効率よくやりなさい」

という意味で使われます。

この「wheel」は車輪の意味なのですが、車輪は数千年も昔から使われてきた、

物を運ぶための発明であり、

それは現代でも変わらず活躍しています。

現代では主に、車やバイクのタイヤ全体を指しますが、昔と

仕組みは変わっておりません。

重い物を車輪付きの台車に乗せて運ぶ、この原理はもはや改良の余地もないでしょう。

これが、このイディオムの言わんとすることなのです。

「  お役所仕事 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”   red tape ” といいます。

例文

Due to the red tape, registrations usually take time.

お役所仕事のせいで、登録はいつも時間がかかる。

「red tape」直訳すれば赤いテープという意味ですが、

英語のイディオムは「形式的な手続き」「官僚主義的手続き」といった意味です。

「非効率で時間がかかる形式的な手続き」といった意味合いで

「お役所仕事」的な意味で使われています。

もともと、イギリスで公文書などを縛るのに赤い紐が使われていたことから

「red tape」が「形式的な手続き」「官僚主義的手続き」といった意味で

使われるようになったと言われています。

通常、red tapeは軽蔑的な意味合いをこめて使われています。

アメリカでは　　”  open a can of worms ” といいます。

「can of worms 」は、魚の餌などに使われる虫の入った缶詰のことです。

“ worm”　とは、虫を意味しますが、

中でもミミズのように細長く足のない形態のものを指します。

　一旦開けてしまうとウジャウジャと出てきて収拾がつかなくなることから、

open (up) a can of worms は「事をややこしくする」「災いを呼ぶ」

という意味で比喩的に使われます。

日本語の表現で「パンドラの箱をあけてしまった」とありますが、

この「パンドラの箱」こそ「a can of worms」なんです。

「  全体像 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”   big picture ” といいます。

例文

細部にこだわっていたら全体像を把握するのは難しい。

「big picture」は直訳すると「大きな写真」ですが、

ビジネスシーンではある状況についてのもっとも重要な事実や、

それが他に与える影響などを含めた、問題の全体像・大曲を意味します。

通常、look at や see とともに使用することが多いです。

アメリカでは　　”    go postal ” といいます。

例文

男は発狂して12人の同僚を撃った。

“The man went postal” は、一見、郵便局へ行ったという意味かな？

と思ってしまいますが、そうではありません。

では、郵便局に行くとは、どういうことでしょうか。

これは、「気が狂う、自暴自棄になる、発狂する」という意味で使われ、

とくに職場でのストレスでそうなることを表す俗語です。

1986年8月20日に米国オクラホマ州エドモンド市の郵便配達員

Patrick Henry Sherrill が上司から「もっとよく働かなければ解雇する」

と脅されたことにムカッと来て、

同僚14人を殺害した事件に由来しているそうです。

「  公平に扱う 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”    give someone a fair shake ” といいます。

例文

Our boss is too conservative to give women a fair shake.

私たちの上司はあまりにも保守的で、女性を平等に扱うことができない。

fairは「公平な」，shakeは「握手」という意味ですが，

fair shakeとなると「公平な扱い」となります。

これは，shakeに米略式で「取り扱い，待遇」という意味があるためです。

「fair shake」口語表現は、1800年代初頭から使われているようです。

サイコロを振ることを英語ではroll a diceと言いますが、

shakeを使うこともあります。

それが転じてa fair shakeという表現が生まれました。

　
一方、「play favorites (with A)」で、

「Aをえこひいきする」という反対の意味になります。

「  大部分 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”     the lion’s share ” といいます。

例文

The eldest daughter inherited the lion’s share of his parent’s wealth.

長女が、両親の財産の最大の分け前を相続した。

The lion’s share は、「（ある物）の大部分」「（ある物を分けたときの）

最も大きい割り当て」という意味のイディオムです。

The lion’s share を直訳すると、「ライオンの分け前・取り分」ですね。

このフレーズは、イソップ物語の最も人気のあるものからきています。

話によると、ライオン、キツネ、ジャッカル、そして狼と一緒に狩りに行き、

彼らは自分が狩ったものは分け合うことに同意していました。

ライオンは雄鹿を狩ったので、全員を呼びました。

ライオンは鹿を平等に4等分するべきだと言いましたが、

1切れ目は自分が百獣の王と見なされいる分で、2切れ目は

自分がそこにいる動物の中で最強である分、そして3切れ目は

自分が鹿を狩った分だと言い3等分食べてしまい、結局最後の4切れ目も、

残りをただ食べたいとのことで彼が食べてしまいました。

この物語から、このフレーズについて否定的な印象を与えるかもしれませんが、

英語では“The lion’s share”を使用して、自由な時間のほとんどを

趣味に費やすことなど、肯定的な意味で何かについて話すのが非常に一般的です。

「  時代遅れ 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょか？

アメリカでは　　”     dinosaur ” といいます。

例文

That cell phone you’re using is a real dinosaur.

あなたが使ってる携帯電話は本当に古いね。

「dinosaur」 は映画にもある通り、普通に訳すと「恐竜」。

「 dinosaur 」 は古い時代に生息した生き物であることから

「時代遅れの人（もの）」「古いもの」という意味で使われます。

ものは、すごい旧式のものだったり、人によっては考え方が

古くさいような人を例えて使われたりします。

「dinosaur」という英単語の語源になっているのはギリシャ語で、

「deinos」と「saura」という二つの言葉が合わさってできた言葉です。

「deinos」は形容詞に相当する言葉で、日本語に訳すと「恐ろしい」という意味があります。

「saura」とはトカゲのことで、2つ合わせると「恐ろしいトカゲ」という意味になります。
