「 今か今かと待ち切れない」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”raring to go” といいます。

raringは形容詞rareが由来ではなく、自動詞rear(up)「（馬などが)後ろ足で立つ」

の現在進行形から来ていると言われています。

フェラーリのエンブレムのように、「馬が前足を地上から上げ、後ろ足だけで立っている状態、

やる気満々」などの状態を表現しています。

ネイティブのリアル英語  pull through (病気・困難を）乗り切る

「 (病気・困難などを）乗り切る」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”pull through” といいます。

pull「引く」「引きずる」のニュアンスから、スムーズに進まない感じが出ています。

また、throughの副詞から、長いトンネルをくぐりぬけるように、その先には

「出口」「突破口」があるニュアンスが伝わってきます。

「絶好調である、とても元気だ」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”in the pink” といいます。

欧米では、ピンク色の肌はとても健康な状態、最高なコンディションであることを指しています。そのため、in the pinkは精神的にも肉体的にもどちらの意味でも「絶好調」の意味で使うことができます。

ピンクは赤ん坊の肌の色を連想するためとも言われています。

病気や困難から「回復する」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”bounce back” といいます。

＜例文＞

bounce back from illness　　病気から回復する

Emma bounced back from her adversity,and started her own business.

エマは逆境から立ち直り、自分のビジネスを始めた。

もともと”bounce”は「跳ねる」という意味ですが、bounceに”back”をつけると

「跳ね返る」いう意味になります。

「退屈でたまらない」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”I’m bored out of my mind” といいます。

out of my mind = 気が狂う、といった意味なので「気が狂うほど退屈している」

=退屈でたまらない、という意味です。

「you are out of your mind」というフレーズが、侮辱としてよく使われます。

君は本当に狂っているね。

ちなみに、「drunk out of your mind」は「とても酔っている」という意味になります。

アメリカでは　　”pull an all-nighter” といいます。

「抜き打ちテスト」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　“pop quiz”　といいます。

“We do a pop quiz.” 「抜き打ちテストをします」　のように使います。

“pop”＝「（音を立てながら）突然出てくる」

「ポップコーン」はとうもろこしがパーンと突然変化した姿なので“popcorn”です。

「quiz」には「クイズ」という意味のほかに、

「小テスト」という意味もあります

特にアメリカでは、小テストを「quiz」といいます。

例えば・・・

「We have a quiz today.」 は「小テストをします。」

となります。

ちなみに日本語で言う「テスト」（test）ですが、英語でも同じように使いますが、

ちょっと違った意味でも使われます。

“test”＝「試す」

新車がちゃんと機能するか試す、「試運転」は英語で“test drive”と言います

ネイティブのリアル英語  killer  超難しいこと、素晴らしい

「killer」と聞くとどうしても「殺し屋」をイメージしてしまうと思いますが、

「killer」はネイティブが様々な意味で使うおもしろいスラングです。

「kill」は「…を殺す」という意味で、人を表す「er」がついて「killer」となり、

「殺す人」つまり「殺し屋」「殺人鬼」の意味になります。

上記で説明した「殺し屋」という名詞から転じて「超難しいこと」

という名詞のスラングが生まれました。

あの試験は超難しかったよ！

スラング「killer」は、「素晴らしい」「すてきな」という形容詞の意味もあります。

ポジティブな意味で使う場合には心臓を貫かれるような衝撃的な、驚異的な、

ネイティブのリアル英語  makeup test (exam)  追試

「追試」はスラング英語で “makeup test” と言います。

　”makeup”には、「化粧・扮装」という意味があります。

試験の結果が悪かったのか、病気か何かの事情で受けられなかった

とき、もう一度、試験をしてもらえる。

　受けるほうからすれば、前回のテストの結果を「makeup」できるところから、

試験をやり直す、「再試験・追試験」の意味になるわけです。
