「 誰かを振る」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”dump someone ” といいます。

例文

So then, are you going to dump Jackson?

それじゃあ、ジャクソンを振るの？

Well, yeah, because I have to break up with someone.

え～、そうね、だって誰かとは別れないといけないから。

つきあっている人など、誰かを 「 振る 」「 捨てる 」 と言いたい時には

dump （someone） という動詞を使って表現することができます。

dump の後ろに振られる人を続けます。

“break up” や”leave” も恋人同士が別れるという時に使われますが、”dump”には

「投げすてる」という意味があることから、一方的に別れを告げる感じです。

「 驚くほどきれい」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”drop-dead gorgeous ” といいます。

She was drop-dead gorgeous.

彼女は驚くほどきれいだった。

美しさを強調する表現です。gorgeous だけでもゴージャスさが伝わりますが、
副詞 drop-dead （意味は extremely ＝極度に）を加えて強調しています。

very beautiful をさらに威勢よく言ったものです。最初は女性専用の表現でしたが、

最近では男性にも使われるようになりました。

“Drop dead !” だけだと「うるさい」, 「あっちへ行け」という意味になります。

語源は、海洋用語で、航海中に気分が悪くなった船乗りは、デッキの下に移動し身体を

休めたそうです。 気分のすぐれない者はデッキの下、つまり空が見えない場所

（under the weather）に移されたことから、このフレーズが使われるようにな

ったと言われています。

また、このフレーズは、体調が悪い時だけでなく、気分が落ち込んでいるようなときにも使います。

stir とは、液体などを掻き回すこと、また精神や感情面の興奮や動揺も意味します。

アメリカのスラングで、stirというと、監獄をあらわし、stir-crazy　とは、

刑務所に長い間投獄されていると、気が狂ったり、精神的に不安定になる

囚人がいることに由来しているようです。

「 ひどく気分が悪い」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”sick as a dog” といいます。

I had a cold and was as sick as a dog. 

風邪をひいていて気分がひどく悪かった。

普通に具合が悪いときは、” sick”　だけでいいのですが、”sick as a dog”　

だとかなり具合が悪い時です。

面白いフレーズですが、くだけたカジュアル表現なので、親しい間柄の人に対して

使うようにしてください。

なぜ猫でなくて「犬」なのかについては、確かな理由はわからないようですが、

犬が人間の生活に深く関わっているから、あるいは動物の吐く姿としては、

犬をよく目にするから（他の動物が吐く姿はあまり見ない）、あるいは

犬はいつも元気なので、病気の時の元気のない姿のコントラストが印象深いから、

等、由来は諸説あるようです。

動物で例える言い回しは、他にも色々ありますのでいくつかご紹介します。

ネイティブのリアル英語  run a fever  熱がある

「 ずっと熱が続く」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”run a fever” といいます。

He ran a fever and was absent from school. 

彼は熱を出して学校を休んだ。

風邪などの原因で「熱が出る」状態となった場合「run a fever」と言います。

体温計で計る等の結果として、「熱がある」場合は「have a fever」になります。

また、この場合、「have」は一時的、「run」は継続的な意味を持ちます。

夫　: How’s the baby?

妻　: The baby is running a high fever. Let’s call the doctor.

夫「赤ちゃんどうしたんだろう？」
