「   成功間違いなし 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”  have it made  ” といいます。

例文

If you get into Harvard, you have it made for life.

 ハーバード大学に入れば、人生は成功間違いない

 “have it made” は、”have got it made”とも言うイディオムです。

「作ってしまっている」というのが直訳で、暑い日に日陰で作られた

冷たいレモネードをあとは飲むだけ、というイメージからきた表現

という説があります。

似たような表現で”make it work”「うまくいかせる」も一緒に覚えましょう。

everything but the kitchen sink なんでもかんでも

「  なんでもかんでも 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”  everything but the kitchen sink ” といいます。

例文

When Mary travels, she takes everything but the kitchen sink with her.　

「マリーは旅行するとき、なんでもかんでも持っていく。」

直訳すれば、流し台以外は全部、となります。移動させられない流し台、動かせるものは全部

ということから、「一切合切」「なんでもかんでも」を意味します。

どうして「流し台」なのか調べてみると、「第二次世界大戦時、あらゆる金属製品が武器の

ために使われるなか、陶器製の流し台は使われなかったところから」などの

説が見られましたが、確かな由来かどうかははっきりしないようです。

downhill  落ち目

「  落ち目（悪化する） 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”  going downhill ” といいます。

例文

John and Chris founded a company together, but things have gone downhill soon after that.

ジョンとクリスは会社を設立しましたが、間もなく事が悪化しました。

go downhill とは、本来の意味は 「坂を下る」 ですが、転じて状況が「徐々に衰える、悪化する」という意味で用いられます。日本語でもこのような状況を 「下り坂」 に例えますね。

アメリカでは　　”  through the roof ” といいます。

例文

Their stock price went through the roof after it was announced

株式公開予定を発表した後、その会社の株価が急騰しました。

今日ご紹介する英語表現は、through the roof（［数値などが］非常に高い水準で）です。

文字通りの意味は、「屋根を通り抜けて」ですね。

さらに、動詞 go とセットになること場合、（1）カンカンに怒る（2）非常に高い水準まで上がる、という意味になります。

アメリカでは　　”  splitting headache ” といいます。

頭痛は英語で”headache” と言いますが、激しい頭痛、割れるように痛い頭痛は

“splitting headache”と言います。

“migraines “ も激しい頭痛で「片頭痛」ともよばれますが、これはより強く

深刻で頻繁に起こるもので、医師に診てもらう必要があります。

アメリカでは　　”  know-it-all ” といいます。

例文

アメリカでは　　”   fishy ” といいます。

例文

I’m wondering his business looks fishy.

なんか彼のビジネスは怪しい感じがする.

Fishと言えば「魚」という意味を思い浮かべる人が多いと思いますが、

実はfishyという単語にはネイティブスピーカーに良く使われている

もう一つの重要な意味があるんです。

「Fishy」を直訳すると「魚臭い」になりますが、人や物事が怪しいと思ったとき、

または胡散臭いと感じる時に使われる表現です。

購入した商品が何だか腑に落ちなかったり、取引に疑念を抱いたとき、

「   間抜け 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”   bird brain ” といいます。

例文

英語の鳥頭（bird brain）は、愚かな人、間抜けな人、落ち着きのない人を

「  意見が合う 」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”  see eye to eye ” といいます。

例文

It’s really easy to work with him on projects because we see eye to eye on most things.

プロジェクトを彼と働くのは本当に楽だ。だってほとんどのことで意見が一致するから。

「see eye to eye」は「目を合わせる」という意味に見えますけど違います。

「意見が一致する」という意味です。

２人以上の人が、何かの物事に対して「同じ意見・気持ちである、同じ考えである、
