▮　単語を制する者はリーディングを制す　！

 

TOEFL　iBTリーディングでは、日常会話では使わない学術的単語・表現が頻繁に

出現しますので、テスト対策の為の語彙習得に重みがあることは一目瞭然です。

約700語ものアカデミックな長文が３題出るわけですから、「読む」為に

相当な語彙力が必要なことは言うまでもありませんが、それに加えて、

               リーディングテストの約　25％

 

が語彙力を試す問題であることで、「スコアアップ」に直結するのです。

1 パッセージあたり４問くらい、３パッセージだと１２問くらいになり、

問題全体の４分の１程度になります。

 

 

▮　どれくらい単語を覚えたらいいのか？

 

 

 

 

日本の受験英語に必要な語彙数は一般に約6000語～7000語と 言われていますが、

TOEFL iBT　TESTでは約7000語～8000語

 

あれば 高得点が狙えると言われています。

但し、Car,Cat のような基本単語も含まれますから、実際に覚えるのは３０００語前後です。

単語の覚え方は人それぞれあると思いますが、以下の２つの組み合わせ

で単語を覚えていくことをお勧めします。

 

◇　単語帳を作る

 

TOEFL iBTはアカデミックなパッセージが出題されますので、

生物学、地質学などの必須分野の単語を１０００前後覚えます。

お勧めリーディングWEBサイト　でも紹介したScientific American

などや「過去問」を読み進める中で、わからない単語があれば、

辞書を引き、どんどん単語集に加えていきます。

 

辞書は、英和、和英、英英辞書を並行して使うといいでしょう。

調べた単語だけでなく、同時に「類義語」「連語」も一緒に覚えるようにしてください。

TOEFLの語彙に関する問題では、パッセージにでてきた単語・フレーズの意味に近いものを
選ばせる４択問題がでてきます。
設問の「単語・フレーズ」の前後の文脈から判断し、最も適した単語・フレーズを選ぶためには、
「類義語」「連語」の知識が必要なのです。

 

★　連語　　collocation

連語とはcollocationの訳で、２つ以上の単語が連結して１つの単語と似た働きをするものです

例えば、

「夢を見る」は have a dream で、see や look を使いません。

また、英語では happy ending で、end は名詞でもあるのに、

日本語のように happy end とは言いません。

このように、文法的なことは無視された単語の並びとなることが

多いので覚えるしかありません。

 

 

 

 

◇　単語集から覚える

 

 

受験者の本音は、TOEFL　iBTリーディングテストに関係ない単語の

暗記は避けたいわけですから、テストに必須単語を重点的に覚えていきましょう。

やはりお勧めは　「3800」です。　3800とは「TOEFL 単語3800」（旺文社）　です。

この単語集には全部でレベル１から４までの単語が収録されていますが、

そのレベル3まで暗記すればリーディングテスト問題はある程度わかるはずです。

 

 

▮　単語は発音して覚える　CDを使って覚える

 

 

CDを聞いてきちんと発音する。

これが出来ているか否かで、その人の英語のセンスがわかると言われています。

発音を習慣化していない人は、たいてい英語のセンスがないそうです。

CDを使わないと正しい発音を覚えることが出来ない。

正しい発音を覚えられないと、リスニング力が向上しません。

 

 

人間は、自分が発音できない音を正確に聞き取ることは出来ないからです。

単語は書いて覚えると唱える方もいますが、書くだけの勉強で英単語は覚えられません。

正しい発音・アクセントを覚えなければ単語を覚えたことにならないからです。

単語を脳に定着させるためには書くことも必要ですが、

優先順位としてはお勧めしません。

 

 

単語を覚える基本は「発音して覚える」⇒「何度も何度も反復する」

⇒「8割〜9割覚えたら、覚えられない単語を書いて覚える」です。

自分が正しい発音が出来るようになったら、スマホのボイスレコーダーやICレコーダー

に覚えたい英単語を吹き込んでリピート再生させ通学、通勤時間にサクサクと覚えていきましょう。

 

 

 

 

▮　TOEFLで高得点を取るために「発音」練習は欠かせない

単語を「発音」して覚えることは、リーディングテストだけではなく、

リスニング、スピーキングを含めて、大切なことは言うまでもありません。

TOEFLで高得点を取るためには、基本的な英語を発音する能力と聞き取る能力を

身に付けなければならないからです。

この２つは英語の音を作り理解する技術の訓練を通して一つの能力として身に付けられるのです。

ネイティブのように話せるようになるのも”in no time”（あっという間）！

 

 

 

ネイティブのリアル英語    booked solid 予約がすべて埋まった

レストランやホテル・チケットなどの予約で、bookは「～を予約する」

の意味で動詞として使われています。

予約がダブることをダブルブッキングと言いますよね。

 

予約がいっぱい（book=予約するという動詞です）

Fully booked

booked up

booked solid

などという表現を見たらいっぱいだ〜と理解しましょう。

reserve（リザーブ）にも「予約をする」という意味がありますが、

この２つの言葉の違いについてアメリカ人の日常英会話の「予約をする」

というレベルでは特に違いはないようです。

 

一方、solidは「いっぱい中身が詰まった」，「固体（の）」などの意味があります

講堂は学生たちで一杯になった。

book solid 　での　「solid」 は一杯詰まってという副詞として使われ

「予約がすべて埋まった」の意味になります。

We’re booked solid till the end of the year.

年内予約でいっぱいです。

▮　タイピングのスキルアップは必須！

 

 

IELTSライティングとは違い、TOEFLライティングでは

パソコンでエッセイを書きます。

仕事でパソコンを使い慣れている方は問題ないと思いますが、

普段ケータイやスマートフォンの使用が多く、パソコンのキーボードに

不慣れな方はタイピングのスキルアップをしておきましょう。

タイピングの効果的な練習方法として、Official Guideなどに載っている

TOEFLテストのサンプルエッセイを見ながら、

それを自分でそのまま真似して打ち直すことをお勧めします。

そうすることによって、タイピングのスキルだけでなく、

普段自分では使わないような表現、段落構成、アイディアの展開の仕方、

なども同時に吸収する事ができます.

 

 

▮　試験で必要なタイピングスピード

 

Task 1では15分で200 words近く、Task  2では25分で300 words以上

を目安に書く必要があります。

実際の時間配分はにはTask 1は20分、Task 2では30分あります。

しかし、最初の2分は構成を考えることに使われますし、

最後の3分は読み返しと校了に時間を充てるのが理想です。

従いまして、各問とも5分間を引いた時間で書く必要があります。

これは普段からキーボードの早打ちに慣れておく必要があります。

▮　アメリカ式キーボードに慣れる　！

TOEFLはご承知の通りアメリカの大学へ行くためのテストです。

そのため、キーボード配列がアメリカ式のもの（QWERTY Keyboard）が使われます。

何が違うかって？    基本キーの配置は同じなのですが、記号などが

微妙に違う所にあるので、初めての時は多少困惑するかもしれません。

受験者ひとりひとりにJISキーボードとUSキーボードの対応表が渡されますが

テスト本番にこの違いに慣れるのには時間があまりにもかかりすぎます。

はじめてTOEFLを受験する方にはUSキーボードへの慣れをおすすめします。

 

★　以下のキーボード配列がアメリカ式になります。

▮　ブラインドタッチ

 

キーボードに慣れるとパソコンを使うのがそれ程苦ではなくなります。

キーボードを見ないで打ち込む方法を、タッチ・タイピング、ブラインドタッチ、

タッチ・メソッド、等と言いますが、これを身につけてください。

一番重要なことは手元を見ないで画面を見ることです。

[A] とか [B] とかの文字を見てはいけません。

 

 

慣れないうちはどうしても見てしまうのですが、

見ないように我慢してください。

これを克服できるかどうかが鍵になります。

我慢できない人はタオルなどを手の上に被せて

強制的に見えないようにしてしまうのが有効です。

手元を見ないので一時的にスピードは落ちますが、

そこは我慢するしかありません。

身につけてしまうまでの辛抱です。 練習では打ち間違えても気にしない。

どんどん打ち込んでいきましょう。

しっかり練習すると、気が付いた時には快適に打ち込めるようになってます。

ネイティブのリアル英語 【line】   台本のセリフ

 

line（ライン）は英語で使う場合は大きくわけると「列（れつ）」

「台本でのセリフ、言葉」「何かのシリーズ」それから

「線としてのライン」が主な意味としてあげられます。

 

アメリカ人が映画や劇場のことでlineを言うとき、

１つの文章やパラグラフを指し、台本で使われる言葉、

「セリフ」としてよく使いますので覚えておきましょう。

▮　Thesis Statement (主題文）とは？

 

Task　1 総合ライティングでは、リーディングとリスニングを行った後、

ライティングで答えさせる総合問題です

問題は、「レクチャーの内容を要約することと、それがどのように

リーディングの内容と関連しているかを述べる」ように

エッセイ(回答文）を書くことになります。

エッセイは以下の3つの部分から構成されます。

①　Introduction   (序論)

②　Body   (本論)

③　Conclusion   (結論)

 

そして、①Introduction (序論）を書く上で最も重要なものが

「Thesis　Statement　（ティースィス・ステートメント）」となります。

Thesis　Statementは、エッセイの①Introduction (序論)で中心主題を表現し、

エッセイ全体の論点を明らかにしていきます。

 

▮　Thesis Statementで、エッセイのアウトラインを示す

つまり、Thesis　Statementを読めばエッセイのアウトラインが

わかるようにするのです。

 

例えば、『生徒が学校に携帯電話を持ってくることについて』

反対か、賛成か意見を述べなさい。

という課題に対し、Introduction (序論）で、「私は生徒が学校に

携帯電話を持ってくることに賛成です」と、書けばいいように思いますが、

これは自分の立場を述べただけで「なぜ賛成なのか」の理由がありません。

 

 

 

評価の高いThesis　Statementを書くには、簡潔に理由を述べて、

「私は生徒が携帯電話を持ってくることに賛成です。

なぜなら携帯電話は緊急の連絡に役に立つこと、セキュリティ上も

親が安心すること、現代生活では必需品になっていること、の3つの理由からです。」

 

Subtopic 1：  緊急時の連絡に役立つこと
Subtopic 2：  セキュリティー上、親が安心すること
Subtopic 3 :   現代生活では必需品になっていること

 

が、エッセイの内容になるというアウトラインがわかるようになっています。

 

▮　Task 1 　でThesis Statementを書く

 

TOEFLライティングTask1では、エッセイのIntroduction (序論）部分で、

Thesis　Statementとして、リーディング文章と、リスニングレクチャーについて、

それぞれの「メインアイディア」と「相違点」を書いていきます。

 

◆　reporting  verb と　transition words

 

リーディング文章と、リスニングレクチャー
それぞれのメインアイディア（言い分）を表現するために「reporting verb」が使われます。

次に、両者の言い分の
相違点を表現するために「transition words」が使われます。

エッセイで重要なThesis　Statementを書くために

「reporting verb」と「transition words」を上手く使うことで加点されます。
