試験勉強で「徹夜する」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　”pull an all-nighter” といいます。

I pulled an all-nighter in order to study for my final test.

　最終試験の勉強のため、私は徹夜した。

all-nighterが「徹夜仕事・勉強」で、

この表現のpullには口語で「〜を実行する」の意味があります。

pull an all-nighterという表現は、

stay up all nightと言い換えることも可能です。

ネイティブのリアル英語  pop quiz   抜き打ちテスト

「抜き打ちテスト」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

アメリカでは　　“pop quiz”　といいます。

“We do a pop quiz.” 「抜き打ちテストをします」　のように使います。

“pop”＝「（音を立てながら）突然出てくる」

「ポップコーン」はとうもろこしがパーンと突然変化した姿なので“popcorn”です。

「quiz」には「クイズ」という意味のほかに、

「小テスト」という意味もあります

特にアメリカでは、小テストを「quiz」といいます。

例えば・・・

「We have a quiz today.」 は「小テストをします。」

となります。

ちなみに日本語で言う「テスト」（test）ですが、英語でも同じように使いますが、

ちょっと違った意味でも使われます。

“test”＝「試す」

新車がちゃんと機能するか試す、「試運転」は英語で“test drive”と言います

「killer」と聞くとどうしても「殺し屋」をイメージしてしまうと思いますが、

「killer」はネイティブが様々な意味で使うおもしろいスラングです。

「kill」は「…を殺す」という意味で、人を表す「er」がついて「killer」となり、

「殺す人」つまり「殺し屋」「殺人鬼」の意味になります。

上記で説明した「殺し屋」という名詞から転じて「超難しいこと」

という名詞のスラングが生まれました。

スラング「killer」は、「素晴らしい」「すてきな」という形容詞の意味もあります。

ネイティブのリアル英語  makeup test (exam)  追試

「追試」はスラング英語で “makeup test” と言います。

　”makeup”には、「化粧・扮装」という意味があります。

試験の結果が悪かったのか、病気か何かの事情で受けられなかった

とき、もう一度、試験をしてもらえる。

　受けるほうからすれば、前回のテストの結果を「makeup」できるところから、

試験をやり直す、「再試験・追試験」の意味になるわけです。

「（試験・テストで）赤点を取る」はスラング英語で “flunk” と言います。

　　　flunk a classで「単位を落とす」、flunk a examで「赤点を取る」

flunkは「しくじる」という意味を持つので、flunk a yearと言えば留年ということになりますし、３年生で留年したなら

　　　”flunk a 3rd grade”　と言います。

ネイティブのリアル英語  final  （期末試験）

“final” は期末試験の意味です。　”final test” 又は “final exam” と呼ぶこともあります。

学期末の大学の定めた期間に行われることが多く、

現地の大学生は 　”finals week”   という表現をよく使います！

アメリカの大学の期末試験の結果は、成績に大きく影響します。

テスト直前まで暗記をしたりノートを見返したり、みんな必死になります。

しかもテストの種類は、日本の中学や高校でよくある「筆記試験」だけではありません。

例を挙げれば、ペーパーと呼ばれるものがあります。

ネイティブのリアル英語  drop a class  （科目をキャンセルする）

いったん履修科目を登録した後に、その登録をキャンセルするとき、

英語で　”　drop a class　”　　と言います。

「Drop a class」は「科目をキャンセルする」または「授業を辞める」という意味です。

主にアメリカの学校システムでよく使われる表現で、

学生が何らかの理由で登録していた授業を取りやめることを指します。

例文：　

Due to her busy schedule, Sarah decided to drop a class this semester

to manage her workload more effectively.

サラは忙しいスケジュールのため、この学期に受けている授業の一つを

キャンセルして、仕事量をより効果的に管理することに決めました。

これは一時的または永続的に授業を受けることをやめる場合に使われます。

例えば、学生が授業の内容が難しい、自分の興味に合わない、
時間割の都合が悪いなどの理由でその授業を続けることができない場合、
その授業を「drop」することになります。

「withdraw（退学）」と記録されることが多いです。

「一夜漬け」って英語ではどう言うんでしょうか？

　　　　　　　Cram the night before a test

と言った表現が一番ピッタリくると思います。Cramのもともとの意味は

「（狭いところに何かを）ぎゅうぎゅうに詰め込む」というものです。

そこから試験前に猛勉強して知識を頭にぎゅうぎゅう詰め込んでいく

イメージにつながったんでしょう。

例えば日本の学習塾は欧米ではあまりないのですが、あえて英語で表現するときには

詰め込み式教育であることから “cram schools” と表現されることが多いです。

ネイティブのリアル英語 lead foot （飛ばし屋）

今回採り上げるのは「 lead foot」という表現です。

lead footは直訳すれば「鉛の足」ですが，これは一体どういう意味でしょうか。

lead foot には飛ばし屋（スピード狂）という意味があります。

He has a lead foot.やHe’s a lead-foot.のように言います。

これは「（アクセルを踏んでいるのは）鉛の足である」ということに由来するようです。

皆さんも運転中は足が鉛にならないように気を付けてください。
