単語力

単語力が足りないままIELTSテストを受けてもスコアは上がっていきません。

実は、単語力はスコアアップを目指す上で、必須となります。

IELTS リーディングで出る1パッセージは大体700~900文字程度で構成されますが、

全ての単語を完璧に覚える必要はありません。

なぜなら、中にはネイティブでも

あまり使わないような単語も含まれているため、全て覚えてしまうと効率が悪いからです。

それよりもまずは、得点に直結するような必須単語を覚えていきましょう。

例えば6.0以上などのスコアを取得するためには、

IELTSで出題傾向の高いアカデミック分野などの英単語など、

延べ3000〜5000語は習得しておく事を推奨しています。

従ってIELTSで6.0以上を目指すなら、8000語以上は覚えておかないといけません。

文法力

文法は英語を学ぶ上で基礎中の基礎。文の骨組みとも言われております。
IELTSでも文法は全セクションにおいて大変重要な要素となります。

IELTSでは、大学受験やTOEICのように文法の知識を直接問うような問題は出題されません。

ですが、文法の知識は絶対に必要です。

例えば、リーディングでは文法知識が問われます。

長文を読む上でどれが主語でどれが動詞なのか、

この文はどの文を修飾しているかなど、文の構造を理解しておかないと、

IELTSリーディングで出題される長文を読むのに苦労します。

また、ライティングやスピーキングセクションでも文法は評価対象となるため、

複文、複合文を正しく使用しているか、文法ミスはないか等、十分注意する必要があります。

副詞節　(Adverbial Clause) とは

節とは、 S + V の関係を持つもので「文の中の文」とも言えます。節には文全体の主語とその述語動詞から成り立つ 主節 と、それに従属的な働きをする 従属節 があります。従属節は 名詞節・形容詞節・副詞節 の 3つに分類されたます。

副詞節とは、副詞の働きをする「節」のことで，普通、接続詞で導かれます。副詞節を導く接続詞には whenやif， because， thoughなどいろいろあります。

今回は譲歩・対象と場所の副詞節      (Adverbial Clauses: Concession and Place Clauses )で複文を書くことを学んでいきます。

although、  though 譲歩の副詞節

Although the operation is not without risk, he intends to have it done.

その手術にリスクがないわけではないが、彼はそれを行うつもりでいる。

He isn’t greedy for money, though he is rich.

彼はお金持ちだけれども、お金に対して執着はない。

 while 対照の副詞節

He likes sports, while I like books.

彼はスポーツが好きだが、私は本が好きだ。

wherever , where  場所の副詞節

whereverを使った文の形は

wherever＋主語＋動詞＋～となり、

whereverが作る文は副詞節になります。

You may sit wherever you want to.

あなたは、座りたいところどこでも座ってよい。

Put the magazine back where you found it.

雑誌をもとあったところに戻しておきなさい

The book was not where she said it would be.

その本は、彼女があるだろうと言ったところにはなかった

　節（Clause)の種類

＜原因や理由を表す＞

●　because

 becauseは、理由・原因を表わすのに最もよく用いられます。becauseで導かれる副詞節は、たいてい主節の後に置かれます。

I didn’t tell my father  because I was afraid of being punished.

父にはそれを話しませんでした。罰を受けるのが怖かったからです。

Why did you choose those shoes? – (I choose them) Because I liked the color.

どうしてあの靴にしたの？　－　色が気に入ったから。

●　since

sinceは、主に相手が知っている理由・原因を表わし、通常は主節の前で用いる。

Since I was thirsty, I drank water.

のどが渇いたので、水を飲んだ。

Since it’s cold outside, you’d better put your overcoat on.

( 外は寒いからオーバーを着た方がいい。 )

● as

 as は since よりも意味合いは弱く、話し手・聞き手とも既に事実として知られている原因や理由を表します。 as には他にも多くの意味があるため、原因や理由を述べる場合には基本的に because や since が用いられます。

As I am busy, I cannot go.

忙しいのでいけない。

As you are sorry, I’ll forgive you this one time.

あなたは反省しているので、今回だけ許してあげます。

＜目的を表す＞

● so that   「 ～ するために 」「 ～ となるように 」

 口語では that が省略されることが多い。この用法の that 節には一般的に can, could, will, would may, might, should が助動詞として用いられます。

We eat so that we can live.

私たちは生きるために食べる。

I spoke so slowly so that the children might understand me.

子供達が私の言うことを理解できるようにゆっくり話した。

●　in order that   「 ～ する目的で 」

 文語的表現で、口語では so that を用います。また、この用法の that 節にも can, could, will, would may, might, should が助動詞として用いられます。

I came early in order that I could get a good seat.

良い席が取れるように早く来た。

He did everything in order that he could get the prize.

彼はその賞をとられるように何でもやった。

1. The problems on road congestion remains a matter of concern because some people are not cooperating with the government.

2. Since the government cut spending, poverty has increased.

3. Pollution is increasing as there are too many cars. (check the SVA – subject-verb agreement)

4. The government is encouraging people to take the public transportation in order to lessen the amount of road congestion on major roads.

5. Work from home must be permitted so that work attrition among workers will be reduced.

句(Phrase)  と　節(Clause) とは

 句と節とは 2 つ以上の語が集まって 1 つの品詞と同じような働きをするもののことをいいます。 英文は 語( 8品詞 )、句、節 から成り立っているため、その 句と節 を理解することで長く複雑な文も書くことができるようになります。

●　節（Clause)の種類

 S + V の関係を持つもので「文の中の文」とも言えます。節には文全体の主語とその述語動詞から成り立つ 主節 と、それに従属的な働きをする 従属節 があります。従属節は 名詞節・形容詞節・副詞節 の 3つに分類されたます。

今回は時・条件の副詞節    (Adverbial Clauses: Time and Conditional Clause)

で複文を書くことを学んでいきます。

●　文中の名詞以外の語句（主に動詞や主節全体）を修飾する節を副詞節と呼びます。

I will call you if it rains tonight

もし今夜雨が降るようなら電話します。

We don’t know when the earthquake happens.

いつ地震がくるのかわからない。

注意！　時・条件の副詞節 は後に続く文に「未来形」を使ってはいけません。

今回は前置詞の目的語になる名詞節   (Noun Clauses)を使うことで

複文を書くことを学んでいきます。 

疑問詞・関係詞・接続詞のthatなどで始まる節が前置詞の目的語になることがあります。

前置詞　青　+　名詞節　赤

●　They were all interested in who would come.

彼らはみなだれが来るだろうかと興味をもっていた

●　I’ve been thinking about what you said.

私はあなたのおっしゃったことをずっと考えています

●　He is proud of what he has accomplished.

彼は自分の成し遂げたことに誇りをもっている。

1. The laws that protects the environment must punish (to whoever disobeys them).

to (前置詞　preposition) whoever disobeys them (名詞節: 前置詞の目的語)

3. Some people are worried about whether the effect of banning cars from city centers could actually solve the traffic problems.

4. Some countries are doubtful on how the increased of tax to cars improve the flow of road traffic.

今回は目的語になる名詞節   (Noun Clauses   Direct Object )を使うことで複文を書くことを学んでいきます。 

〔句（２語以上の語のまとまり）〕の中に、“Ｓ（主語）＋Ｖ（動詞）”の関係が含まれているものを、【節】と呼んでいます。この〔節〕が、【名詞節】となって、【目的語（Ｏ）】となっている場合があります。

〔名詞〕は、主語（Ｓ）にも目的語（Ｏ）にも補語（Ｃ）にも成ることができるので、〔名詞節〕も目的語（Ｏ）になれるんです。

主語　+　動詞　+　目的語（名詞節）

●　Study: Definition

目的語になる名詞節は動詞の後に置かれ主文の働きをします。

Explanation: Subjects will be green, the verbs in blue, and the objects in red.

For example:

The history book describes how England became the first industrialized nation.

Again, an NC has a subject and a verb (and possibly an object)

how England became the first industrialized nation.

●　II. Study: 　試験で使える！　接続詞 that  + 名詞節

that以下の文（=taxes on travel flights must be taxed heavily.）がこれだけで「渡航税に重税を課すべきだ」と S + V の構造になっていて完全な文になっています。

また、接続詞 that は省略することもできます。

1. Some people believe that taxes on travel flights must be taxed heavily.

2. Others think that increasing levy on these travel accommodations could not solve pollution problems.

3. In fact, a study from Harvard University shows that more people who work on shifts suffer from higher level of stress.

4. Most schools today claim that extra classes for students allow them to be helped in their weaker subject areas.

今回は名詞節(Noun Clauses)を使うことで複文を書くことを学んでいきます。 

名詞節とは、文章を名詞化することを意味します。節とは、主語と動詞を含んだ文章を言います 。

名詞節 (Noun Clauses) の種類

1. What he told me was true.
2. The problem is that we have no money with us today.
3. I don’t know whether [if] John likes Japaneses food.
4. He is proud of what he has accomplished.

文中で名詞と同じ働きをする節を名詞節と呼びます。

名詞節は、文の中で以下のような働きをします。

①　主語　：　(1) のWhat he told me

②　補語　：　(2) のthat we have no money with us today.

③　他動詞の目的語：(3)のwhether [if] John likes Japaneses food.

④　前置詞の目的語：(4)のwhat he has accomplished.

今回は関係詞節(Relative Clauses)を使うことで複文を書くことを学んでいきます。 

●　単文（simple sentence)

He lives in the city.  彼はその町に住んでいる

I visited the city ten years ago.　　私はその町に10年前に行った。

The city had a terrible earthquake last year.　その町は昨年ひどい地震に見舞われました

●　複文(complex sentence)

The city which I visited ten years ago had a terrible earthquake last year.

　　 Relative Clauses　関係詞節

Study:　 Relative Clauses　関係詞節とは、

1. 一つの主節と一つの従属節で構成されます。
2. 述べられている人や物（名詞）を修飾したり、より詳しい情報与えます。

This is the book which I bought yesterday

関係詞節　which I bought yesterday (私が昨日買った）が、名詞のthe bookを修飾しています。

This is the office where I work

関係詞節 where I work（私が働いている）が、名詞のthe officeを修飾しています。

このように関係詞節によって修飾される名詞を先行詞と呼びます。

関係代名詞

関係詞の中で関係代名詞は節の主語や目的語のような名詞的要素になる代名詞の役割をします。

先行詞が人、物、場所によって関係代名詞が使われます。

関係代名詞は、who, whom, whose,which,thatがありますが、when, whereも

関係代名詞として使われることもあります。

People = who/that

Things = which/that

Places = where

1. Animal experimentation (noun), which is legal in most countries, should be banned. Animal experimentation should be banned. (independent clause) review lesson 5 which is legal in most countries (dependent clause – relative clause)

4. Obesity, which is the condition of being overweight, affects millions

IELTS Writing Task 2 Basic 　 hypothetical situations　仮定条件

IELTSのライティングTask 2では、問題文に対し hypothetical situations　（仮定条件）

でエッセイを書くことを求められることがあります。

現実とは違うことを表したり、将来を推量するためにwould ,could の

ような助動詞を使って表現できるようにしましょう。

＜仮定法＞

仮定法とは、「現実とは違う」ことを表すための動詞の形です。

「今」のことを表すときには過去形が使われ、「昔」のことを表すときには過去完了形を使います。

●　例文　（仮定法過去）

If I had a of of money, I would buy a Ferrari.

たくさんお金があったら、フェラーリを買うんだけどな。

（現実にはお金がないからフェラーリを買えない）

If I had enough time and money, I would travel around the world.

もし十分な時間とお金があれば、世界中を旅行するのになあ。

（現実に時間とお金がないから世界両行ができない）

●　例文　（仮定法過去完了）

She would have died if the climber had not found her.

もしもその登山者が彼女を見つけていなかったら、彼女は死んでいただろう。

（その登山者が彼女を見つけたので、彼女は死なずに済んだ）

1. If the government spent money on hospitals, people would be healthier.

2. There could be a cleaner environment if local residents abide the laws that keep the surroundings pristine.

Sample Paragraph

Due to the growing number of cars, the amount of toxic gas emitted increases which could lead to the worsening of greenhouse gas effect. If the government improves the public transportation, the commuters would not only be able to relish the services of mass transport, but they could also give up using their private cars. When this is realized, the detrimental effects of greenhouse gas caused by heavy emissions of gaseous fumes would be lessened, and road congestion would also decline.

特にイントロダクション（序論）とConclusion(結論）では、Synonymsを使って

言い換えができるようにしましょう。

Intelligent machines such as robots are widely applied to take the place of human beings.

As technology continue to evolve, the growth of industrial machines rapidly increases. This has been observed by the rise of robots that can do some human activities where these intelligent machines are now used across industries to replace workers. There can be advantages to this, but this also presents some major social issues.

There has been a heated debate whether computers will be integrated in classes or going back to traditional methods in teaching. Others argue that having computers in the class could impede student’s learning in reading and writing, while some explains that these modern technology aid in their overall academic learning. I partially agree with this argument that computers aid learners in their overall academic performance.
