22. 存在を表す
特に写真などを見ながら話す場面では、なにがどこにあるのかを述べる必要が出てきます。もっとも一般的なのは、 Thereis ..There are…「…がある」という構文を使った言い方です。これは、〔There is…＋場所の形〕でよく登場します。また、be動詞も存在を表すので、〔A be 場所〕「A が• • にある／ いる」という言い方や、これが倒置された〔場所 be A〕「・・・には A がある／いる」という言い方もよくします。
◎ There is / are…「…がある」
There are footprints in the snow from several people.
雪には数人の足跡があります。
On the table, there are some eggs in a carton.
テーブルの上に、カートンに入った卵がいくつかあります。
In the foreground, there is a living room with a sofa.
手前に、ソファーのある居間があります。
It’s obviously wintertime, because there is snow on the ground.
地面に雪があるので、明らかに冬の時期です。
◎ A be 場所「A が・にある／いる」
It looks like they are in a tropical location.
彼らは熱帯の地域にいるようです。
She might be on a college campus.
彼女は大学のキャンパスにいるのかもしれません。
I suppose they are in a jungle.
彼らはジャングルにいるのだと思います。
A kitchen is toward the back and a dining room is to the right.
キッチンが後ろのほうに、ダイニングが右のほうにあります。
◎ 場所 be A「…にAがある」
Next to the eggs is a bowl of flour.
卵のとなりにボウルに入った小麦粉があります。
