18. 目的・手段を述べる

目的を示す表現では、 不定詞の副詞用法や、 その応用であるin order to… 「…するために」というフレーズ、あるいは for …「…のために； …のための」という前置詞がよく使われます。また、手段を表すのには、by…「•••によって」という前置詞、方法を表す場面ではway「方法」という名詞を活用した言い方を身につけましょう。

◎to…「•••するために」
A lot of people go there to see a famous statue of a dog, called “Hachiko.”
大勢の人が、ハチ公と呼ばれる有名な犬の像を見るためにそこへ行きます。

◎in order to…「…するために」
All four of them are wearing helmets, in order to be safe.
安全のために、4人全員がヘルメットをかぷっています。

◎so…「…するように」
They are wearing helmets so they don’t get hurt.
ケガをしないように、彼らはヘルメットをかぶっています。

◎for (-ing)「・・・のための： …のために」
It’s possible the cups were for soup.
カップはスープ用だったのかもしれません。

◎ I read that …「…と（本などで）読んだ」
I read that tea is harvested from spring to fall.
お茶は春から秋にかけて収穫されると読みました。

◎I’ve read that…「…と読んだことがある」
I’ve read that in the US, the average person spends 110% of their annual income.
アメリカでは、平均的な人が年収の110％を使うと読んだことがありますl

I’ve also read that the Broadway shows are amazing!
ブロードウェーのショーもすばらしいと聞いたことがあります！

◎They say that…「…と言われている」
They say that flying is the safest way to travel.
飛行機に乗るのがもっとも安全な旅の方法だと言われています。
